Bangalore Days is a 2013 Indian romantic comedy film directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK. It stars Tota Roy Chowdhury, Aparna Sen, Sharmila Tagore, Sriram Lagoo and Saheem Ali. The film is based on the short story "Amar Jyoti" written by famous Bangla writer Ismat Chugtai in 1934. The story is set in Kolkata during the Partition of India in 1947. A young Muslim man falls in love with a Hindu woman while she attends night school to improve her skills so that she can find employment. As they cannot marry under Islamic law, they live together without getting married. After their son is born, they decide to live separately in order to avoid religious hostility in the society. Director Raj Nidimoru said the film was their attempt at "rewriting history" by taking a modern-day story set in the past. He said because of its "contemporary parallels" to today's society, he felt it would be more relevant for today's generation to watch rather than a period piece. The film was shot in various locations across rural and urban Bangalore during October 2012. It was released on 6 August 2013. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, collecting over in its lifetime and becoming the second highest-grossing film in 2013. Shashank (Tota Roy Chowdhury) is the son of an orthodox Muslim businessman. He lives with his father and two uncles in a posh apartment building in Kolkata, East Bengal (now Bangladesh). Shashank is lazy but well liked by others for his comic antics and kind nature. The other three men are his heartless uncle Saheb (Sriram Lagoo), strongman uncle Hasan (Saheem Ali), who works as a bouncer at a brothel, and intellectual uncle Mansoor (Sudip Mukherjee). They respect him for his father's sake, but treat him like a "memsahib"(doll). His father's last wish is to marry Shashank off and give him a son. Shashank falls in love with Radha (Aparna Sen), a Hindu girl who lives in the next neighbourhood and studies in the same college. She works part-time to support her family, consisting of her widowed mother (Sharmila Tagore) and younger sister Manju (Jhilik Bhattacharjee), who is getting married soon. Radha spends most of her time with the neighborhood children playing pranks against Shashank and she eventually marries him to avoid problems from society. The newly-weds are happy at first, but soon find themselves in strife because of their religious differences. Radha's mother will not allow Radha to give up her Hindu heritage, while Shashank's father insists he break his Muslim tradition and marry a Hindu woman. The couple has a son named Bilal (Abhinay Deo), nicknamed "Lala". Shashank continues to work with Saheb for extra money, when Bilal is taking an exam in school. A colleague of his, Rabi (Sharan Pandey), takes him with him to a party and introduces him to alcohol and drugs after drinking too much himself. cfa1e77820
